Askerne is a single estate winery situated in the winegrowing region of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand . We are committed to producing elegant fine wines that reflect our unique site and our winemaking philosophy and passion.
The Askerne vineyard and winery was developed by John and Kathryn Loughlin in 1993. Initially purchased as 28 acres of bare river terraces, the property has been expanded to 50 acres which are being progressively planted.
We aspire to produce wines which complement food but are vibrant and exciting when standing alone.
Askerne is named after an old Yorkshire Spa town which was the birth place of Kathryn Loughlin. The trees on the label are a representation of the gum trees, which are a major feature of the winery site.
Some of Askerne's accolades and reviews
Askerne Pinot Gris 2016, 5 stars Wine Orbit, Silver Medal NZIWC
'This delectable pinot gris is beautifully ripe and fragrant on the nose showing peach, mango, poached pear and floral characters with a hint of spice complexity. The palate is concentrated and succulent, and offers rounded mouthfeel and silky texture, wonderfully enhanced by refreshing acidity. Generous and flavoursome, and hugely appealing.
Askerne Viognier 2015, 4½ stars Wine Orbit
Askerne Gewurztraminer 2013, 4 stars Raymond Chan, Gold Medal Air New Zealand
"Very fragrant and rich with a bouquet filled with pear, rose, quince, apple and apricot fruit suggestions. On the palate – dry, warm, rich and crisp. A wine loaded with personality and texture, lots of spice and weight and a long finish. Delicious!' 5 stars Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
Askerne Syrah 2013, 4 stars Raymond Chan, Silver Medal Air New Zealand, Silver Medal Royal Easter Show
'I love the super-pretty, dark magenta and crimson colour of this wine - it just looks glorious in the glass and - bonus, it tastes darn lovely too. With earthy, deliciously dusty, smoky, peppery plum and dark berry aromas, ripe fruit, warming spices and long, stretchy tannins - this is a new favourite for me.' Yvonne Lorkin
Askerne Chardonnay 2015, 4½ stars Wine Orbit, 4 stars Raymond Chan
